Air Source Heat Pumps are more popular now
There are a few reasons that air source heat pumps are becoming more popular, the main reason is the there are tariffs here in the UK that will incentivize people into having them. In April 2011 the Renewable Heat Incentive will become active this is a program that will pay for you to install certain renewable items such as air source heat pumps groundsource heat pumps biomass boilers for a period of up to 20 years, mind you this will be run by the government which is always fraught with danger, unlike the already in practice feed in tariffs for solar panels and wind generation that have been around since April 2010 the latter is run and paid for by the utility companies. The air source heat pumps that are around today including the Ecodan are getting a cop5 which means that for every 1 killo watt that it takes to run the ecodan it pumps out the equivalent of 4 killowatts in usable power. Air sourceheat pumps are also getting cheaper to produce and install where ground source heat pumps cost more because you need to put a collector in the ground either by putting a ground loop slinky in the ground or you will have to drill a few boreholes in the ground, generally to 100 mtrs deep.
The Ecocent
Air Source Heat Pump, Hot Water Cylinder, Heat Recovery and Ventilation
Installed from £2,500
An innovative and versatile combined heat pump and hot water cylinder to operate as a stand alone unit or in conjunction with other renewable energy systems (e.g. solar panels). Available in a range of sizes from 150 to 300 litres (500 litres available to order) this single unit comes complete with:
- Air to Air Heat Pump
- Heat Recovery and Ventilation
- Fully insulated Hot Water Cylinder
- Integral Heat Exchanger
- Solar Coil
- Backup immersion heater
- Control panel
- Copper pipe inlet & outlet
This Ecocent unit only consumes 800w of electricity, which is much less than an electric kettle! This small amount of electrical energy is used to drive the integrated air source heat pump and produces all the hot water you need.
New regulations will limit the tap outlet temperature of domestic hot water to 45°C (primarily to avoid the risk of scalding) and to comply with those regulations, our Ecocent unit is designed to operate most efficiently in the 40 - 50°C temperature range.
The Ecocent unit in most situations is a better option than solar panels, and can be supplied and installed for less than half the cost of a solar panel system. It can provide 100% of your hot water requirements and unlike solar panels will provide hot water at night and in the shorter winter days.
The Ecocent unit can even provide central heating for smaller homes and apartments! It has the addition of an integrated solar coil, which will link directly to solar panels if preferred. The use of solar panels can assist in meeting the ‘better homes’ targets for new builds and refurbishments, and when used in conjunction with the Ecocent unit will provide all of the benefits with none of the drawbacks.
The Ecocent unit, as well as being ideal for domestic settings, is also the perfect choice for business and commercial applications. It will provide hot water using the waste heat recovered from kitchens etc, which can also in turn provide effective cooling.
The "payback period" is very short and cost savings are delivered throughout the life cycle of the unit... savings run in to many thousands of £££££... Excellent for restaurants, bars, cafes, schools, hospitals, care homes, sports complexes or any establishment with a need for hot water.
For example, in a bar & restaurant it could recover the waste heat in the kitchen to heat the hot water, and also provide effective cooling for the cellars. The Accent unit is so versatile. The unit would also be taking hot air out of the kitchen making for a more pleasant working environment. This heat would otherwise just be totally wasted!
Case Study:
Large residential home's - new system
The above picture is of a residential home for the elderly and has 18 residents. The new hot water system comprises 2 X 300 ltr Ecocent units and is saving the owners 70% on historical hot water costs - delivering a 100% payback in less than a year.
Golf Club
This case study is for a Golf Club. The brief was to find ways to lower the clubs carbon footprint at the same time as saving money.
We started the program of energy saving projects in one of the Kitchens where large amounts of hot water are used throughout the day:-
PROJECT TO INSTALL A COMBI UNIT INTO KITCHEN
We decided to approach the improvement of the Client’s hot water arrangements with an initial “quick win” small project. This was to allow the Client to see the Ecocent unit running and saving money every day in the Client’s kitchen. We could then look at other “quick win” projects and continue with a series of small projects, demonstrating before the commencement of each project the savings that the Client would make by adopting air source heat pump technology, initially for hot water supply.
We believed that, because of the logistics and the layout of the water pipes, the dish washer in the main kitchen on the 1st floor was the small project to start with. We had been given basic statistics to work from, by the kitchen staff and Client Management:
Dishwasher water usage:
All numbers used below are very conservative and represent MINIMUM savings that are available.
3 X 60ltr fills per day (say 2.5 fills) = 150ltrs per day/day
PLUS: 150 dishwasher cycles per day @ 2.4ltrs per cycle = 360ltrs/day
PLUS: Sink next to dish washer = 100ltrs/day
Total water usage = 610ltrs/day for just the one dishwasher.
CURRENT RUNNING COSTS:
To raise 610ltrs to 50°C from, say, an average of 10°C takes the following power:
4.187 J X 610kgs X (50°C – 10°C = 40°C)/3.6 = 28.378Kw/hrs.
With a traditional heating source maximum thermal efficiency is 95%, meaning that approximately 105% power is required to achieve the desired water temperature increase.
Thus, 28.378Kw/hrs X 105% = 29.797Kw/hrs to achieve the increase in water temperature required for the defined volume of water.
CURRENT COST - Based upon electricity the cost of this power usage was 29.797Kw/hrs X 0.115p (electricity tariff paid by the Client) = £3.43 per day cost of heated water to fill the dish washer.
CURRENT COST per Yr = £3.43 X 363 days/yr- £1245.09 PER YEAR.
CO2 output from the process = 2.5 Tons.
COST USING COMBIUNIT:
The Ecocent unit uses about 1Kw (810 Watts) power to produce 3+ KW of heat. This can go as high as 3.7Kw heat from one Kw/hr of electricity.
Using very conservative numbers:
To create the same heat energy, the Ecocent unit will use, say, only 33% of the cost that is incurred currently.
So the COMBI cost is £1245.09 X 33% = £410.88
SAVING using the Ecocent unit, just for one dish washer in the upstairs kitchen is:
£1245.09 - £410.88 = £834.21/year.
CO² savings of 1.7 tons/year = 25.5 tons over 15 years.
The above takes no financial credit/account of the use that cold processed air could be put to – for cellars, excessively warm rooms, etc; great in summer for busy public spaces that do not have air con. The Ecocent unit is a very versatile unit. The unit would also be taking hot air out of the kitchen making for a more pleasant working environment. This heat would otherwise just be totally wasted!
The Client was the first golf club to fit such energy saving and CO2 production reducing equipment.
SPECIFICATIONS
The Ecocent unit is available in sizes up to 500ltr and is designed to fit in most airing cupboards. It is a perfect cost effective replacement for a traditional pressurized hot water tank, whether retrofitting or new build.
The Ecocent unit controls are clear and simple to operate.
The cold air produced as a by-product of delivering hot water can be used for cooling applications such as supplementing air conditioning!
The cost of the Ecocent unit is comparable to a more traditional pressurized hot water tank system, but running cost is a fraction of the traditional system.
Thus, the "payback period" is very short and cost savings are delivered throughout the life cycle of the unit and the savings run into many thousands of £££££...
In addition the unit has no harmful emissions.
Stylishly designed domestic units can also be widely used in commercial buildings.
The Ecocent unit is relatively light, making transportation to and around the installation site much easier. This in turn makes installation easier.
This unit provides:
- A mains pressure hot water cylinder for your home that can produce over 1000 litres a day with energy savings of up to 75%.
- It always saves you money (even without sun) and no panels on your roof.
- Inexpensive and relatively easy installation.
Please note that the Ecocent unit is also capable of delivering space heating for small houses or apartments. This can be done by using the secondary coil within the unit to deliver heat to a heating system.
As this unit is so versatile, it will deliver savings of up to 70% when used for suitable space heating applications. Clean Green Energy Management recommends that for space heating applications the Ecocent unit be used in conjunction with Fan convector radiators.
It does this as follows:
- Air is drawn in to the top of the unit, heat energy is extracted (even cold air has energy) and transferred to the water.
- Optional flexible ducts can lead to your roof space or any large indoor area, like a double garage, to maximize the use of latent heat sources.
- Cooler, dehumidified air is expelled and can be used to cool areas such as kitchens, bakeries etc. (or pushed outside or back in to the roof space).
- The process guarantees very low running costs.
- The unit can run during the daytime to take advantage of warmer air and has programmable functions and timers.
NOTE:
- The unit is for indoor installation only (e.g. airing cupboard).
- It is installed in the same way, and just as easily, as a conventional mains pressure hot water cylinder, with additional ducts to your roof space or elsewhere (as appropriate).
